What is the difference between Counseling and Coaching?
Both counseling and coaching utilize knowledge of human behavior, motivation, and behavioral change, as well as interactive helping techniques. They differ in their goals, focus, and level of professional responsibility.
The focus of coaching is development and implementation of strategies to reach client identified goals of enhanced performance, understanding of purpose and how to live that out, and personal satisfaction. Coaching utilizes personal strategic planning, vision creation, values clarification, motivational tools, and other helping techniques.
The goals of counseling are alleviating symptoms, understanding the underlying dynamics which create symptoms, changing behaviors, and developing new strategies for coping. While I am a board certified counselor and have several skills that accentuate coaching, I will only be able to provide coaching. It’s important not to mix the roles but it can be very beneficial to have both a counselor and coach, it just can’t be the same person.
What types of Coaching do you provide?
With broad experience counseling and coaching many people through different walks of life, I enjoy coaching my clients in multiple areas. From relationship challenges, developmental crossroads, and career decisions to learning to live intentionally, creating healthy space for self after trauma healing, and generally getting unstuck, I welcome you on this journey.
How many Coaching sessions will I need?
While coaching needs differ from person to person, the majority of my clients schedule 4-6 sessions, sometimes over the course of a few months. Coaching is solution oriented with the focus of attaining specific, created goals. Often, when those goals are achieved, individuals wish to pause coaching for the time being and pick up at a later time as new challenges, interests, or goals arise. The door is always open.
